The band was formed in the summer of 1992 by Luke Haines. Luke Haines (vocals, guitar and writer to all Auteurs songs) was born in Surrey in southern England for about 29 years ago. When he was 15 he started playing in a band and has since played in some different bands, but the most famous band (before The Auteurs) he played in was The Servants which he played in during the 80s. But Luke wanted to form his own band. He recruited his girlfriend, bass-player Alice Readman (who also played bass on the last Servants album) and Glenn Collins, drummer.

They played some gigs in London and they were by many compared to T-Rex and David Bowie on the Ziggy Stardust era. A demo made NME impressed and they later got to play a "NME-gig". The Auteurs signed to Hut Records in November 1992 and they released their debut single Showgirl, and about a month later they released their debut album, New Wave.
New Wave was nominated a Mercury Prize for best album of the year and the album went up in the charts. They made a UK tour and also went to America. At this time the cello-player James Banbury had joined the band to help them on tour. The Auteurs didn't enjoy touring very much and in 1994 they released their second ablum Now I'm A Cowboy. James had now joined the band as a "real member" and a new drummer, Barney Crockford had replaced Glenn Collins. The band went on tour again, touring UK, US and European summer festivals (on this tour they made, at least to me, a strong impression that they were a great live band).

In 1995 they recorded their 3rd album After Murder Park, produced by noisy producer Steve Albini. The band clearly showed their disslike for touring as they only played a few gigs, promoting the album. The band has now taken a break for a while and the mebers are working on their "side-projects".
